Before there was Jayden Daniels and Dan Quinn frittering away an almost certain win there was Cam Skattebo.
The New York Giants were at Washington’s 24-yard line Sunday with the game tied at 27 in need of only a field goal to secure a walkoff win in overtime. Rather than settle for a 41-yard kick, they ran the ball with Skattebo on first-and-10 in hope of getting into the end zone or, more likely, setting up Dominic Zvada for a shorter kick.
Neither happened. Instead, Skattebo fumbled, and the Commanders recovered. And what just seconds earlier looked like a Giants win turned into disaster for New York.

The Commanders instead had the ball with 1:55 remaining and a chance to drive for their own game-winning field goal attempt.
They got into position to do so, and then they did this.

That’s Daniels inexplicably running and getting tackled inbounds in field-goal range in the game’s final seconds with no timeout.

And that’s Quinn slamming his headset in frustration as the clock ticked down to zero on a 27-27 tie, his team having just squandered a chance at a win.
‘Sigh of relief’ for Skattebo
As for Skattebo, he was left off the hook by the play. Kind of.
Skattebo still fumbled away a likely Giants win. But instead of a loss, the Giants were gifted a tie. And the focus was taken off of his late-game snafu and placed squarely on Daniels and Quinn instead.
For Skattebo, the moment added up to a “sigh of relief.” But he recognizes that he’s not completely off the hook.

“It was a sigh of relief, you now,” Skattebo told reporters at his locker. “I probably won’t get reamed as much, but I’m still gonna get reamed. At the end of the day, my number was called, and I gave the ball up.
“If that happens again this year, I promise you that won’t happen.”
That’s obviously not a promise Skattebo can guarantee to keep.
As for Sunday, Skattebo’s just content to not be the focus of the storyline on a Giants loss.
