The Washington Commanders were quite busy during the first day of the NFL’s legal tampering period, adding several players in key positions. Whether they were adding depth or a potential starter, GM Adam Peters is showing that he’s paying attention.

One of the biggest goals this offseason is to address the defensive weaknesses the Commanders saw in 2025. The secondary was a huge problem in 2025, largely because of injuries, but also because more skilled players are needed in that area of the field. To that end, the Commanders brought in veteran cornerback Amik Robertson to help fill the void.

Robertson is a veteran defensive back with plenty of knowledge and experience to share. Let’s take a look at five things to know about the Commanders’ new addition.

Family matters

Amik’s mother’s name is Kima, which is how Amik got his name; it is Kima spelled backwards. She was young when she had him, just 15 years old, and his father was incarcerated during the early part of his life. He reunited with his father around age 11, and overcoming that adversity and reconciliation has influenced his perspective on responsibility and resilience.

Robertson also became a father at age 15. His son, Aiden Miguel, was born in August 2014. It was a turning point for Robertson, who has said it made him take life and football much more seriously. Living through the adversity he faced in his youth and teenage years has made him the person he is today.

Breakout season in 2025

Robertson is entering his seventh season in the NFL and had his best career performance in 2025 with the Detroit Lions. He recorded 52 tackles, 12 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and one interception. He is known as a feisty, competitive player with a strong underdog mentality. Standing at just 5-foot-9 and weighing 183 pounds, what he lacks in size he makes up for with strong tackling and competitive traits. His size can be a struggle against bigger receivers, but he’s largely overcome that obstacle with sheer athleticism so far.

2025 was his best season to date, but that doesn’t mean he’s peaked or that he can’t do better. With his veteran knowledge and experience, he brings solid depth and talent to the cornerbacks’ room.

Durability and availability

For the last four seasons, Robertson hasn’t missed a single regular-season game. He is a versatile defensive back who can play both outside and in the slot, giving the Commanders flexibility in how he is deployed. With Mike Sainristil and Trey Amos anchoring the outside of the secondary, Robertson is poised to handle the middle of the field.

What the Commanders value most, though, is his ability to stay healthy. The Commanders’ secondary was less than stellar in 2025, and Robertson not only changes the dynamic but also improves the skill in the secondary.

Philanthropy

Robertson is from Thibodaux, Louisiana, and he regularly returns home and gives back to his hometown community. He holds youth football camps, having hosted multiple annual camps aiming to help kids get meaningful football experiences he didn’t have growing up.

On the field, Robertson has worn special gear that represents causes he cares about. For example, he wore cancer-awareness cleats for the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign to honor his late grandmother. He consistently prioritizes his family and giving back to the community where he was raised.

Hobbies

Off the field, Robertson has several hobbies. He enjoys video games, especially games like Madden NFL, which he uses to relax and stay connected to football culture when he’s not practicing. He enjoys movies, especially superhero movies. He uses music to help him relax and stay focused, which also helps him mentally prepare for games. And during the offseason or downtime, he enjoys traveling to new places, which he shares with his fans on social media.

Finally, one of the things he is best known for is his distinct sense of style. Fans see him showcasing his fashion choices online and appreciating his unique style.

Amik Robertson adds depth and talent to the field, but he also adds color and flare to the locker room.
