It’s a new offseason for the Dallas Cowboys, and with that comes their annual contract drama. This year, it’s centered on how the team will get a deal done with free agent wide receiver George Pickens.
Both sides have said they would like to remain in the partnership; Pickens had his best season and the Cowboys’ offense thrived as the team paired Pickens with a legitimate quarterback in Dak Prescott and fellow elite WR CeeDee Lamb. The trio resulted in fielding one of the top offenses in the league, something Prescott is willing to do anything to continue.
Prior to the NFL’s Pro Bowl games, where the triumvirate is uniting thanks to each earning the award for being among the best in the league, Prescott mentioned he has no problem getting involved in keeping Pickens in the fold in Dallas.
Dak Prescott on George Pickens:
“We got to get one of our guys signed. He’s an important piece of this offense and to what we’re trying to do. Obviously, if I need to get involved, I will.
We have two No. 1’s.” 👀

It’s unclear what the Pro Bowl signal caller is offering to help keep Pickens, but the easiest thing Prescott can do is agree to restructure his contract to open space under the team’s salary cap. The Cowboys are currently over the projected cap but can trigger restructurings on numerous contracts to alleviate any concerns about having the money to pay any free agents. Pickens remains at the top of the Cowboys’ list as a priority to re-sign this offseason.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t always mean a deal will get done with this organization. Jerry and Stephen Jones are known for dragging their feet on expensive contract negotiations, something Prescott, Lamb, and Micah Parsons can all relate to in dealing with the Cowboys. Prescott has suffered the frustration firsthand twice, and could offer some advice to Pickens, which could be part of his helping hand.
The franchise QB could also push for a deal sooner rather than later so the duo gets a full offseason of workouts together. Currently, reports are that no contract talks have begun between Pickens, his agent (David Mulugheta) or the Cowboys. Accomplishing this feat would also help the Cowboys build a better overall team for 2026 and beyond.
There has been some talk about the team using the franchise tag on Pickens if needed, but hopefully a deal gets worked out instead. The path of using the tag could lead to Pickens not training with the Cowboys during the offseason and everyone playing another waiting game this summer.
It’s clear where Prescott stands, he wants to keep Pickens as an option in the passing game. The Cowboys were second in offense and second in passing yards per game this season; it was also a campaign where Prescott bounced back and showed he was still a top QB in the NFL.
Losing Pickens could jeopardize one, or a few, of the best seasons Prescott has left. Keeping the offense intact and building a better defense could help the Cowboys get back into the playoffs and give them a real chance at competing for a Super Bowl.
Prescott is willing to do anything he can to keep Pickens and make that path a reality.
