What C.J. Stroud told Houston Texans in postgame speech after loss to Cowboys. ‘We can go 13-4’

C.J. Stroud wanted to say something to his Houston Texans teammates after Sunday’s 34-30 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Very few things have gone right for the Texans, now sitting at 0-4. But Stroud still believes in the team.

“His message after the game was straight up like we can go 13-4,” said tight end Brevin Jordan, who played in a regular season game Sunday for the first time in two years. “Like why not? Who cares what people say. Who cares what people think. Whatever the situation is, let’s just show up to work tomorrow. Let’s get it fixed and let’s run the table.”

But there was also something else Stroud got across, according to his fellow captain Will Anderson Jr.: The only people who will be able to revive the season are the Texans themselves.

“I think C.J. hit it on the head after the game,” Anderson said. “Nobody coming to save us…We gotta go out there and play grown-man football and we gotta take accountability.”

Stroud declined to get into the specifics of what he said after the game, explaining that he wanted to keep it within the team.

But Stroud did tell the media he wants the group to stay together despite the rough start.

“I just wanted to get in front of them and just let them know how much I believe in them and trust in them,” Stroud said. “I know we’re not in a good spot, and it’s not where anybody wants to be. But I’ve seen other teams do it before. I know we’ve done it.”

Stroud, a captain since being selected second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been arguably Houston’s best player on offense this season. He played another good game against the Cowboys.

The fourth-year starter was 21 of 31 for 347 passing yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s 34-30 loss. His 347 passing yards is the fifth-best mark of his career and the second time he’s thrown for 300-plus yards in a game this season.

Typically, when Stroud has thrown for more than 300 yards, he’s done so in part because he threw the ball a lot. In the prior 10 times he eclipsed 300 passing yards, he did so averaging 40.3 attempts per game. That wasn’t the case Sunday. His 11.2 yards per attempt was the highest of his career, slightly edging out his previous best mark.

“At the end of the day, we ought to be able to win,” Stroud said.

A winless start to the season is nothing new for Stroud, Anderson and head coach DeMeco Ryans. Houston started 0-2 in 2023 and 0-3 2025. The Texans made the playoffs both times, winning the division that first time around as well.

But 0-4 is different from 0-3. Just one team has ever made the playoffs after starting 0-4.

One way Houston can try and become the second is doing something by Stroud and Anderson highlighted as something the team must do better.

“We gotta finish,” Stroud said. “We’ve shown that we can create explosives. We can have high-scoring games. We could get ahead when we need to. But I think the best thing that we need to do, or really the main thing we need to do, is finish.”
