After a much-needed week off, the Virginia Tech Hokies (16-7, 5-5) are back on the hardwood for a noon tipoff Saturday in Raleigh against the North Carolina State Wolfpack (17-6, 8-2). This game kicks off a critical stretch for the Hokies, who will face the Wolfpack on Saturday, followed by games against No. 20 Clemson, Florida State and Miami over the next 10 days. Clemson, N.C. State and Miami are all ahead of the Hokies in the ACC standings.
The Wolfpack are not yet a lock for the NCAA Tournament, but are trending in that direction. They’ve won five in a row and seven of their last eight games, with their most impressive wins coming against Clemson and SMU.
N.C. State features a balanced offense with at least four players averaging 13 points per game. Senior forward Derrion Williams leads the Pack, averaging 15 per game. The Wolfpack’s top interior scorer is senior Van-Allen Lubin, while the trio of Paul McNeil Jr., Quadir Copeland and Tre Holloman make up an impressive backcourt.
We learned some unfortunate news on Thursday when Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young said sophomore guard Tyler Johnson would be out again for the Hokies on Saturday. Last weekend, Young was optimistic that Johnson would play against the Wolfpack. Unfortunately, Young said he wasn’t quite ready, but he is on track to return soon in Tech’s current stretch of games.
Junior forward Amani Hansberry leads the Hokies in scoring at 15 points per game, while sophomore guard Ben Hammond (12.8), freshman Neoklis Avdalas (12.5), Tobi Lawal (11.1) and Jailen Bedford (11.0) are all scoring in double figures. Junior guard Jaden Schutt averages almost nine points per game off the bench. Johnson averages 10 points and five rebounds per game, but has missed the last 10 games.
A key for the Hokies is preventing the Wolfpack from taking uncontested 3-pointers. N.C. State is 11th in college basketball in 3-pointers made per game and shoots 40.1% from beyond the arc, which ranks 7th nationally.
