Jordan Schultz is reporting that new Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh has been telling teams in the interview process that he plans to call the defensive plays at his next stop. That’s an interesting development. The last head coach we had here also started out as the playcaller, albeit on the other side of the ball. That didn’t go so well.
I’d prefer that Saleh hire a defensive coordinator whom he trusts to call the plays. The head coach has a lot of responsibilities on game day without having to worry about the right call on a pivotal third and four in the fourth quarter.
If Saleh is going to call plays, hopefully, the Titans will put the proper infrastructure around him to help him with all of the decisions he has to make during the course of a game. They have really leaned into the analytics side of the game over the last few years. That should make some in-game decisions automated.
This also makes the offensive coordinator hire that much more important for Saleh. If he can get someone like Mike McDaniel as his OC, he won’t have as much to worry about when the offense is on the field. Plus, McDaniel is an offensive genius and will be great for Cam Ward.
How do you feel about Saleh calling the defensive plays?
