The Philadelphia Phillies won their Opening Day matchup against the Texas Rangers thanks in large part to an offensive contribution from one key player.

To open the sixth year of what has been an up-and-down career with the Phillies to date, third baseman Alec Bohm earned the chance to hit fourth in the lineup on Thursday. And that will be a key spot in the batting order this season, as it comes directly after franchise slugger Bryce Harper, who could use some more protection.

And Bohm delivered in a big way.

“Alec Bohm might not be the ideal cleanup man, but he did the job Thursday,” Jim Salisbury wrote for NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Bohm picked up (Kyle) Schwarber and Bryce Harper after the pair had struck out with two men on base and the Phillies nursing a 2-0 lead in the fifth against Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi… He got a 2-0 cutter from Eovaldi and lofted it to the opposite field and into the seats for a 5-0 lead.”

Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm Files $3 Million Lawsuit Against Parents

Though there are a lot more games to be played, the hit offered a good sign about Bohm’s potential contributions to the offense in his contract year with the team.

But his heroics were quickly overshadowed by some off-field controversy, as news surfaced that he was engaged in a lawsuit against his parents.

“Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm has sued his parents for millions of dollars, accusing them of siphoning large amounts of his money into financial accounts they managed for him and then using some of the cash to pay their own expenses,” the Associated Press reported. “Bohm’s lawsuit asks his parents to pay at least $3 million in damages, hand over control of the accounts and hire an accountant to track every dollar they transferred from Bohm’s personal accounts to the accounts they controlled.”

Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm Receives Update From Parents After Lawsuit News

Immediately after Thursday’s game, Bohm refused to elaborate on the report for the press. But his parents sent a clear five-word message about the situation through their lawyer when they said that they are “deeply saddened by the allegation,” according to the Associated Press.

“Mr. and Mrs. Bohm love their son very much and have always acted in his best interests, both personally and professionally, and still do so to this day,” the lawyer, Robert Eckard added, per the Associated Press.

If Opening Day was any indication, the legal battle won’t distract Bohm from his role as a key batter in the Phillies’ lineup. But his parents’ initial message on the lawsuit suggests there could be some lengthy litigation ahead.
