The 2026 Winter Olympics will partially be a farewell to one of the best women’s alpine skiers of all-time.
Lindsey Vonn is competing in her fifth and final Winter Olympics, and the story of her preparations has dominated headlines.

Vonn was already a terrific story by making a post-knee surgery comeback into competitive skiing. Then, she tore her ACL in a crash days before the Olympics, but confirmed her plans to participate anyway. Given all her circumstances, Vonn faced a significant test in even competing in Milan, let alone finishing with a medal.
The 41-year-old lined up for her first podium shot in the women’s downhill on Sunday, having clocked the third-fastest time in her second training run on Saturday. Unfortunately, it ended in personal disaster: Vonn crashed early in her run after hitting a flag with her shoulder, and she had to be airlifted from the slope by helicopter.

Vonn, the owner of three all-time Olympic medals heading into the 2026 Winter Olympics, saw her brave and arguably reckless shot at a fourth end in agony at the top of the women’s downhill run on Sunday.
The first part of the course was running fast, with the USA’s Breezy Johnson clocking the quickest time, and Vonn lost control early in the run when her right shoulder clipped a gate.

The impact spun her round in mid-air and Vonn landed in a heap. She screamed in pain repeatedly as she received prolonged medical attention before an air ambulance arrived amid stunned silence from the crowd in attendance.
The spectators then rose to applaud when the helicopter took off with Vonn hanging from a gurney suspended below the aircraft.

Lindsey Vonn Olympic events schedule
Vonn announced her plans to compete in three different events, but her crash in the women’s downhill almost certainly marks the end of her Games and top-level career.
The women’s team combined and super-G events take place on February 10 and February 12 respectively.
All of the Olympic skiing action can be streamed through Peacock. The official women’s downhill event will air at 9:20 a.m. ET on NBC on Sunday. Vonn’s other two scheduled events, team combined and super-G, will air on USA Network.
