The Los Angeles Rams made a small move during the 2024 free agency period when they signed former Washington Commanders safety Kam Curl to a two-year, $9 million contract.

It wasn’t a big deal at the time, but Curl has turned into one of the team’s most reliable safeties. He tallied two interceptions in the regular season and added two sacks and a career-best 122 combined tackles before making an overtime interception against the Chicago Bears to help set up the Rams for a game-winning touchdown in the divisional round.

That play reminded Curl of why he joined the Rams. He recounted to Kay Adams this week that Rams head coach Sean McVay recruited Curl by promising to “unlock all the abilities” that he hadn’t been able to utilize during his time with the Commanders.

“He believed in me when nobody else did,” Curl said. “He was telling me ‘you’re gonna come here and we’re gonna unlock all the abilities that you ain’t been able to show.’ And that’s what he did. He trusts me to play on the back-end, deep or in the box. I appreciate him for taking a shot on me.”

Curl will get at least one more game with the Rams before he becomes an impending free agent for the 2026 offseason. If the Rams beat the Seahawks in the NFC championship game, Curl will get another shot to prove to the Rams — or another team — why he deserves an extension.

The Rams will have a big decision to make with Curl, who will be 27 next season. Safety is typically a position the team hasn’t prioritized with extensions or long-term deals, so it would be a surprise to see McVay and general manager Les Snead allocate significant cap space toward Curl, especially with players like Puka Nacua, Byron Young and Kobie Turner looking at contract extensions soon.

Curl might be worth $10 million a year, too, which the Rams may not be interested in paying. Other teams, though, could want Curl more and be able to lure him away from L.A.
