Ahead of the Boston Celtics’ 125-116 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night, the fifth (and presumably final) episode of “The Quiet Work” aired on NBC. This mini docuseries covered the return of Celtics star Jayson Tatum from the day he ruptured his Achilles to March 6th, when he made his season debut at TD Garden.

While some earlier reports said that Tatum suiting up for the Green Team this season was an uncertainty, the latest episode documenting his journey back hinted that the six-time All-Star was determined to do so. In fact, he felt ready enough to verbalize this goal 55 days before he actually took the court again.

Near the end of the brief episode, Tatum was pictured sitting inside the Kaseya Center on Jan. 15th. The date wasn’t officially listed, yet that’s the only time the Celtics faced the Miami Heat on the road this season. The 2024 NBA champion then told the camera that his confidence in “coming back” was growing by the day.

There were always rumblings that Tatum could return sooner rather than later, however, it didn’t always seem plausible. Here’s video evidence that says it wasn’t only plausible, but it was also being discussed earlier than people thought, proving the ninth-year Celtic refused to sit on the sidelines much longer and was dedicated to helping his team make a playoff push.

Since Tatum was added to the starting lineup this season, the Celtics have gone 2-1, with the sole loss coming against the Spurs just a few hours after this docuseries clip was shown. Tatum had a season-high 24 points and played 27 minutes for the third straight game, likely revealing the exact number of his minutes restriction.

The Celtics put up a good fight versus the talented Spurs and didn’t give in after star guard Jaylen Brown was ejected in the second quarter for squabbling with the officials. Without Brown — and with Tatum not at full capacity — the C’s didn’t have enough firepower to counter Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who hit 8 triples en route to a 39-point performance at home.

Boston will forget all about its second defeat to San Antonio this season if it can win its next game.

On Thursday night, the Celtics square off with the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder. If Tatum, Brown, and Thunder MVP hopeful Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are good to go for this marquee matchup, the meeting between the two last NBA champions should live up to the hype.
