Everyone is assuming that Gavin Doty is going to transfer from Siena to Syracuse to join new Orange head coach Gerry McNamara.
Doty has actually already more or less said what he plans to do now that McNamara has been officially announced as Syracuse’s new head coach.
After Siena’s upset bid fell short against Duke last week, Doty told reporters, “I plan on playing for G-Mac through my whole career.”
Doty hasn’t actually made any move yet, though.
There’s a reason for that.

Is Gavin Doty coming to Syracuse?
While it’s the assumption, it’s not a given yet.
The reason is simple: The transfer portal doesn’t actually open until Tuesday, April 7 — the day after the national championship game.
Even if players more or less know what they’re doing next, they can’t announce any move yet.
It’s a logical fit for Doty when you consider he’s from Fulton, which is about 25 miles north of SU.
Doty just averaged 18.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this season for the Saints. He shot 45% from the floor and 32% from 3-point range.
The 6-foot-5 guard has played a pair of college seasons, meaning McNamara would still have him for multiple campaigns in Syracuse.
And barring a surprise, it seems like he’ll be committed to the Orange soon enough.
