GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Former University of Michigan hockey players say coaches and staff allowed sexualized hazing inside the program for years.
The 16 former players filed the 74-page lawsuit Wednesday against the school and the board of regents.
The players say it happened over 17 years — between 1984 and 2001 — as part of the program’s “standard hazing traditions.” The lawsuit claims coaches knew about it and failed to stop or report it, saying they even encouraged it as “a form of team bonding.”
The players are asking for damages and changes they say would help prevent hazing in the future.
University administrators told The Detroit News that the allegations are “disturbing,” but called many elements of the complaint “misleading.”
