Liverpool Women started their 2026-27 season strong, with a league win over Charlton along with a draw against Tottenham where they could say they were the clear better side and a defeat at defending champions Manchester City that was level headed at the 90 minute mark.
On Sunday, they added another win to the tally at Anfield when they faced off against Everton. As has been the case in each of the other matches bar perhaps City (and even then it was close), they were the better side. In the end, they won 2-0, pushing them up to fifth in the table.
“It’s been a long time coming,” captain Grace Fisk said after the match. “In a few games [against Everton] I feel we’ve performed well but not got results, so we wanted to make sure we didn’t repeat that and I think everyone who watched the game would say we deserved the win.
“I’m just so proud of all the girls. Everyone knows what it has been like the last few years at Anfield and it’s a fine balance of understanding it’s a derby and it means more, but also we have to keep our heads and know our game will win us the game and it was an amazing performance.”
Along with their strong start in the league, Liverpool kicked off their League Cup campaign with a 4-2 group stage win over Sunderland last week and continue in that competition facing Birmingham City on Wednesday. Then, it’s Manchester United in the league next weekend.
For at least today, though, it’s the win against Everton that’s the focus for fans, and it’s a game where the Reds went up in the fourth minute thanks to Beata Olsson. They kept getting chances after, but it took until the 86th minute for the second—and a little comfort—to arrive.
“Nobody likes a 1-0 as the game goes on and we had so many chances,” added Fisk. “We were creating and creating and it wasn’t going in, but we just knew we had to keep going and we had the fans behind us, which really helped us—and eventually the second goal came.
“We saw the game out, got the win, and kept a clean sheet so we’re delighted. This is a big statement but it wasn’t anything that surprised us as we went in totally ready to win, so we are really excited for the rest of this season. This is just the start and we want to keep going.”
