The Kansas City Chiefs knew they needed to address the secondary in the NFL Draft after losing both starting corners, Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.

And that is exactly what the franchise did.

But they were ruthless in doing it, too. They traded up from No. 9 to No. 6 with the Cleveland Browns to ensure they got LSU corner, Mansoor Delane.

A genuine Day 1 starter and the best corner in the draft, according to some experts, Steve Spagnuolo got a monster in the secondary.

And ESPN’s Matt Miller has named Delane as one of his favorite picks of the draft.

“Trading up from No. 9 to No. 6 to draft Delane was one of my favorite moves for a couple of reasons,” Miller wrote. “With three Super Bowl wins and two more appearances since 2019, the Chiefs don’t pick this high very often, so I liked that they maximized this rarity and aggressively pursued one of only two corners with a Round 1 grade.”

Chiefs set for resurgence?

After being at the top of the NFL for so long, many knew the Chiefs would stumble eventually; they just didn’t think it would be as spectacular as it was last season.

But it gave the franchise extra time to peel back the curtain, identify its deficiencies on the roster, and attack them. Which was easier with two first-round picks.

Defensively, the Chiefs nailed the draft, according to many experts, but the big question mark is Patrick Mahomes. How healthy will he be when he returns, and also, when will he return? Week 1 or later, say Week 6?

The Chiefs are too well-run an organization to have another down year, and their moves this offseason paint the picture of a franchise ready to begin the Super Bowl climb…again.
