Former Greenville Lion sprinter Kamron Neal is to make his track debut for Texas Tech during an indoor meet this weekend.

Neal, who transferred to Texas Tech from Panhandle State in Oklahoma, is entered in the 300-meter dash and in the 4×400-meter relay at the Corky Classic at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock.

Neal is to run in the first heat of the 300-meter dash at 8:05 p.m. on Friday. There are six heats. Other runners entered are from Texas Tech, Texas, Purdue, Arizona State, Northwestern State, Baylor, Abilene Christian and New Mexico Junior College.

The 4×400-meter relay is scheduled for 3:40 p.m. on Saturday. The Red Raiders are in the first heat with Texas, Arizona State and Texas A&M. Other relay teams entered are from Lubbock Christian, Western Texas, New Mexico J.C., Baylor, Purdue, Angelo State, Northwestern State, South Plains, Arizona, UT-El Paso, TCU, West Texas A&M, Abilene Christian, Wayland Baptist and Tarleton State.

Neal finished second in the 200-meter dash at the NAIA Indoor (20.70 seconds) and Outdoor (20.77) Track and Field Championships while competing for Panhandle State this past season. He also finished third in the NAIA Outdoor Championships as a freshman in the time of 20.74.

His best time in the 200 is 20.27.

Neal also ran the 100-meter dash, the 400 and on the 4×400 relay for Panhandle State.

He won a district title in the 200 as a senior for the Greenville Lions and was a wide receiver and running back for the Lions in football.

Caden Thurman, who won six state track titles while at Wolfe City, finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational indoor meet in Houston.

Thurman, who ran last season for the University of Houston, was running unattached. He clocked a time of 8 minutes, 19.21 seconds. Zachary Miller of Houston won in 8:11.89, followed by Jonathan Rivera of Lamar (8:15.63) and Remay Abraha of Houston (8.18.86).

All four times were under the meet record of 8:25.07 set in 2024 by Freddy Richardson of Lamar.

Thurman won six Class 2A state championships while running for Wolfe City in cross country, plus the 800, 1600 and 3200 runs.

Royse City-ex Nevaeh Zavala scored 10 points and had six rebounds and five assists during High Point’s 72-58 women’s basketball win over Radford.

Zavala, a 6-0 senior, is averaging 9.3 points and 4.4 rebounds for the 15-2 Panthers, who are 4-0 in the Big South.

The Panthers are to play next at Longwood University on. Saturday in Farmville, Va.

Brett Nix, a former Wolfe City and Leonard basketball player, scored five points and had one steal during Oklahoma Science and Arts’ 71-70 men’s basketball loss to Texas Wesleyan on Thursday.

Nix also recorded nine points, one assist and one steal during the Grovers’ 83-78 loss to Wayland Baptist. Nix was at Wayland Baptist before transferring to Oklahoma Science and Arts.

Nix, who is a 6-0 freshman, is averaging 6.6 points per game for the 5-11 Drovers, who’ll play next on Saturday at Nelson University in Waxahachie.

Connie Hughes, a 5-6 sophomore from Bland, tallied one rebound and two assists during Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s 62-33 women’s basketball victory over Arkansas-Monticello.

Nicole Weaver, a 5-9 junior from Royse City, pulled down three rebounds for Arkansas-Monticello.

Weaver also managed one point and five rebounds during the Cotton Blossoms’ 77-62 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma.
