State ranked Bloomington South, North tennis to collide in sectional final

BLOOLMINGTON — Swift, precise, efficient.

The No. 7 Bloomington South and No. 26 Bloomington North boys tennis teams wasted no time or effort, dropping just three games while dispatching Owen, Valley, Edgewood and Brown County on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 29 and 30, to open play in the South Sectional.

South defeated Owen Valley and Brown County by 5-0 scores and North did the same against Edgewood in its semifinal. None of the three matches took more than 45 minutes.

The Panthers and Cougars will clash at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1 in the final, with the winner advancing to the Avon Regional.

Semifinals/first round

South 5, Brown County 0: The Panthers swept each match 6-0, 6-0 behind Caleb Lian, Alex Chong and Jonah Gray at singles and Abe Corry and William Liao at 1 doubles and Elliot Trolle-Eng and Fred Wu at 2 doubles.

North 5, Edgewood 0: North’s Dev Chopra defeated Ryne Klinger and Ben Konisky beat Landon East 6-0, 6-0 at the top two singles spots while North’s Eric Shin was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Caleb Garrett at No. 3. In doubles, Tommy Chopra and Avi Danthi beat Sam Paul and Zane Walcott 6-0, 6-0 and Noah Johnson and TJ Nguyen took down Liam Kersten and Jackson Wells, 6-1, 6-0.

South 5, Owen Valley 0: The Panthers swept all five matches with 6-0, 6-0 wins in Tuesday’s opener with Albert Hur filling in for Gray at 3 singles.
