The injury-riddled Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a perfect position to reunite with a former fan-favorite wide receiver after his recent release.
On Tuesday, the New York Giants released former Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to make room for their Najee Harris signing. Pittsburgh, however, has dealt with major wide receiver injuries and could use a veteran like Smith-Schuster as a viable depth piece.
The Steelers’ top two receiving options, DK Metcalf (unspecified) and Michael Pittman Jr. (right leg), have missed practice over the past few weeks with their respective injuries. Smith-Schuster, who has recorded 5,646 yards and 34 total touchdowns in his career, would immediately compete with Roman Wilson and Germie Bernard for a WR3 role.
Smith Schuster was drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He earned 2018 Pro Bowl recognition for his outstanding seven touchdown, 1,439 yard season.
A reunion seems like a win-win scenario for both the veteran receiver and the team that drafted him. Pittman already tried to recruit Smith-Schuster before he joined the Giants, but now seems like the ideal opportunity to make this dream a reality.
