Women’s strawweights kick off festivities at UFC Vegas 120, as
Canuto (7-1, 0-0 UFC) dukes it out with Foro (9-1, 0-0 UFC) at 115
pounds. Chris Tognoni draws the officiating assignment. Glove touch
gets them out of the gate. Leg kick from Foro inside the first 10
seconds. They trade jabs, and Foro sneaks in a left hook and
another leg kick. Foro now targets the body, then goes back to the
leg. Canuto answers with a left hook and a jab. Another leg kick
from Canuto. For lands a left hook to the body, along with another
hard low kick. Canuto responds with two leg kicks of her own. Nice
one-one-two from Canuto. Foro staggers her counterpart with a left
hook, then takes aim at the lead leg. Canuto shoots on the hips. No
luck on the takedown. Midway through the round. Multi-punch volley
from Foro, who follows up with a leg kick. Canuto unleashes a right
hand over the top. Foro jobs at the body and fires a straight
right. Canuto scores with a leg kick. Ninety seconds on the clock.
Front kick to the body from Foro, who fends off a jab and connects
with another low kick. Canuto with a leg kick and a one-two, then
whiffs on a Superman punch. Sharp jabs from Foro, along with a leg
kick. They circle in the center. Canuto jabs to the body but eats
another powerful leg kick, followed by a straight right and two
left hooks to the body. Foro has her reeling with power punches at
the end of the round.

Round 2

Foro clearly out in front at the start of Round 2. Lack of
firepower definitely an issue for Canuto. Foro jabs at the body,
resets and avoids the return fire. Canuto changes levels and
secures a takedown, then moves behind her counterpart. She takes
her time, punches the side of the head and sets both hooks. Foro
suddenly in real danger. Canuto bites down on a body triangle,
threatens the neck and forces her opponent onto all fours. Foro
eats a few punches to the side of the head while trying to control
a wrist. Midway through the round. Action stalls. Canuto frees one
of her hands and scores with hammerfists. Ninety seconds left.
Canuto resets her hooks and starts to punch again before briefly
threatening the neck. She transitions to kimura and lands elbows to
the body and leg. Strong round for Canuto.

Round 3

Should be a round apiece as they traverse the final five minutes.
Foro takes the center and leans into her jab. Canuto secures
another takedown. Foro immediately gets back to her feet and
separates. Canuto paws with her jab but eats a one-two. Foro closes
in behind hooks from both hands, her stout jab and damaging low
kicks. Canuto answers with a right over the top. Canuto trips Foro
to the floor but cannot keep her there. For unleashes jabs and
hooks, some to the head, others to the body. Canuto cuts loose with
punches of her own but lacks the firepower of her adversary. Foro
sprawls on an attempted takedown and keeps the action on the feet.
Canuto shoots on a single-leg and clings to it, then pushes Foro to
the fence. Foro lands elbows to the side of the head. Canuto goes
to her knees and eats more elbows. Canuto switches angles and gets
a takedown with a little more than a minute to go. She moves to
north-south position and attacks the right arm with an armbar.
Canuto breaks Foro’s grip and extends the arm but cannot produce
the submission. Foro scrambles free, shuts off a takedown attempt
and batters her opponent with punches. They exchange wildly for the
final 10 seconds.

pitting Miller (4-4, 2-3 UFC) against Oliveira (7-4-1, 0-3 UFC) at
125 pounds. Kerry Hatley administers the law and order. Inside leg
kick from Oliveira. The Brazilian leans into her jab, then whiffs
on an overhand right. Oliveira sneaks in another jab and follows
with an inside leg kick. Sharp overhand right from Miller. Oliveira
answers with a one-two, forcing her counterpart to clinch. Miller
throws knees to the body from the clinch and traps Oliveira along
the fence. More knees to the body from Miller, who has slowed the
pace to her desired levels. Midway through the round. Oliveira
breaks free but gets caught by a one-two. Miller changes levels and
secures a takedown with roughly 90 seconds left on the clock. She
drops elbows, punches and hammerfists, all while maintaining top
position in half guard. Miller passes guard to side control behind
standing-to-ground punches, then moves to knee on belly. She
continues to drop elbows. Oliveira appears to have lost her way
here. Miller scores with a steady stream of elbows and punches to
close the round.

Round 2

Off they go in the middle stanza. Miller feints early and often, as
the two women circle each other in the center of the cage. Oliveira
blocks a high kick, but Miller crashes forward and completes a
takedown. She lands in side control and starts to let the elbows
fly. Oliveira moves to all fours.
Miller takes the back, sets one hook and goes palm to palm on a
fight-ending rear-naked choke.

Attention at UFC Vegas 120 now turns to the featherweight division,
where Johns (15-5, 6-5 UFC) awaits Vazquez (14-6, 0-1 UFC) at 145
pounds. Herb Dean adjudicates matters. They greet one another with
a glove touch and get down to business. Both men paw with the lead
hands from opposing stances. Hard leg kick from Vazquez breaks the
ice. Johns stalks from the center of the cage and whiffs on an
overhand right. Johns steps into a right hook, resets and drives
home a jab. They trade overhand rights, with Johns appearing to get
the best of the exchange. Johns lunges forward behind a left hook.
Vazquez scores with a low kick. Midway through the round. Vazquez
drops Johns to a knee with a counter right hook.
Johns answers and sits him down with a left hook, then closes the
deal with a series of standing-to-ground punches.

They keep the UFC Vegas 120 line moving with a lightweight clash
between Miranda (13-1, 0-0 UFC) and Sousa (14-1, 1-0 UFC) at 155
pounds. Jason Herzog steps into the Octagon to referee. Miranda
probes with his jab. Inside leg kick from Sousa. The Brazilian
follows a one-two with another inside leg kick. Sousa clinches and
pins the promotional newcomer to the fence. They trade elbows at
close range but stay in the clinch. Miranda lands a 12-to-6 elbow
to the top of the shoulder, throws short punches and breaks into
open space. Nice one-two from Miranda. He ducks a punch and
completes a takedown. Miranda moves behind his opponent and lands
punches. He flattens out Sousa and continues to exact a toll with
punches and hammerfists. Miranda pauses the attack briefly, flirts
with a choke and lands more punches. One minute to go. Miranda
connects with punches and elbows, then climbs to mount. More
punches and elbows from the American. Sousa survives.

Sousa has some work to do as Round 2 gets underway. Inside leg kick
from the Brazilian. Miranda paws with his jab. Sousa with two more
inside leg kicks. Miranda now switching stances to hide his damaged
appendage. Sousa lands another low kick. Sousa cuts off a takedown
attempt and scrambles behind his opponent, all while landing
punches. Miranda lands a few defensive elbows while pressed into
the cage. Sousa breaks with a left hook. Miranda clinches. They
separate. Inside leg kick from Sousa, who has done his homework.
Miranda goes nowhere with a weak takedown attempt. Sharp jab from
Sousa. Miranda answers with a one-two. Miranda switches stances
again. Sousa attacks the other leg. Sousa lands a crushing overhand
right, backs up Miranda and doubles over his opponent with a left
hook to the body. Miranda scrambles out of danger and gets to a
clinch along the fence. Miranda lands a spinning back elbow to
force a break, then goes high with a glancing head kick. Inside leg
kick from Sousa. Thirty seconds to go. Miranda in real danger here,
his base clearly compromised. Sousa lands a pair of right hands,
sprawls and lands hooks from both hands.

Could be a round apiece with five minutes to go. Herzog releases
the hounds one more time. They trade jabs. Miranda lands a one-two
and evades the return fire. Two more inside low kicks from Sousa,
who follows with a right hand over the top. He leans into a left
hook. Miranda clinches and presses the Brazilian into the fence.
Sousa breaks and fires punches from both hands. Hard low kick from
Sousa. He sprawls on a takedown but eats a right hook from Miranda.
They separate, and Sousa gets back to targeting the lead leg.
Midway through the round. Sousa crowding Miranda with punches, only
to wind up in the clinch. Nice one-two for Miranda, who shoots a
left hand to the body and then goes upstairs. Sousa steps into a
left cross, resets and clinches. They trade punches against the
cage. One minute left. Sousa lands a right hook to the body.
Miranda shoots on the hips but cannot procure the takedown. Sousa
braces himself against the fence and separates the grip. He lands a
spinning back elbow in the closing seconds.

Sutherland takes the center and lands a leg kick. Luiz circles on
the outside, throws a one-two and eats a leg kick and an overhand
right. Sutherland clinches. Luiz lands an elbow over the top and
completes a trip takedown, landing in side control. Slashing elbow
from the Brazilian. Sutherland gets to his feet, only to be taken
down again.
Luiz jumps to the back and flattens out his opponent, then laces
his arms around the neck and forces the tap while readjusting his
grip on the neck crank.

Lopes (14-3, 1-2 UFC) toes the line against Nurgozhay (11-2, 1-2
UFC) at 205 pounds. Hatley exercises the oversight. A glove touch
lights the fuse on this one. Nurgozhay opens with a leg kick out of
the southpaw stance. Two more low kicks. Lopes answers with one of
his own. One two from Nurgozhay followed by a front kick to the
body. He shoots a straight left to the body and backs it up with
two more leg kicks. Body kick from Lopes. They trade low kicks.
Nurgozhay fires away with a right hook upstairs, then goes back to
the legs with kicks. They trade low kicks again. Nurgozhay taking
aim at both of the Brazilian’s legs with kicks. Lopes clinches but
goes nowhere with it. Ninety seconds to go. More leg kicks from
Nurgozhay. Lopes connects with a kick to the midsection. Nurgozhay
retreats after being poked in the eye, resulting in a brief pause
to the action. Nurgozhay uses the restart to get back to his
trusted kicking game. He shoots another straight left to the body
and follows it with a back kick to the body. Nurgozhay floors the
Brazilian with an overhand left and swarms with punches. Lopes
somehow gets to his feet and gets a takedown. Nurgozhay scrambles
to his feet, plows forward behind an uppercut and drops him again
with a left hook. This time, Hatley has seen enough and waves it
off with just one second left on the clock.

Heavyweights tie a bow on the UFC Vegas 120 undercard, as Asplund
(7-2, 1-1 UFC) puts Pat (6-1, 1-1 UFC) to the test at 265 pounds.
Dean polices the proceedings. Asplund opens with a leg kick and
presses forward. Pat ducks a one-two and clinches. Asplund turns
the Brazilian into the fence and works short punches to the head
with knees to the legs and body. They jockey for position along the
cage. Shoulder strikes from Pat. Asplund responds with knees to the
body. Action slows, with Dean hovering nearby. Crowd grows
restless. Asplund lands an elbow on the break, floats into open
space and connects with a right hand over the top. Pat clinches to
avoid further damage. Halfway home in the first round. Pat boxes
the ears but stays safe. Asplund lands another elbow on the break.
He doubles up on his jab but eats a right hook on the counter. Pat
scores with a low kick. Asplund presses forward behind his jab.
Another leg kick from Pat, then fires off two left hooks. Asplund
backs him to the fence and scores a knockdown with a right cross.
He passes to side control and drops a series of mean elbows.

Asplund gets back to his feet and clinches. Dean warns Pat for
grabbing the top of the fence. Hard leg kick from Pat, who has
turned the tide here. Pat lands hooks from both hands. Asplund

clinch again with a minute to go. Asplund connects with an elbow on
the break. They exchange jabs. Asplund clinches, tries to execute a
