Former Germany midfielder Lewis Holtby on Tuesday announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35.
Holtby, who most recently played for Dutch club NAC Breda, announced the decision on Instagram.
“One of the greatest honours of my career was representing my country – something I’ll always be proud of,” Holtby wrote
Holtby made three appearances for Germany between October 2010 and November 2012.
He spent much of his career in the Bundesliga, playing for clubs including Schalke, Mainz, Hamburg, Bochum and Holstein Kiel.
Holtby also had spells in England with Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, as well as Blackburn Rovers.
“I’ll never turn my back on football. This game will always be a part of who I am, and I’m excited for what’s next,” Holtby wrote.
