A spectator who suffered heart failure during Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bundesliga match against Cologne has died in hospital, the club said on Tuesday.

Frankfurt said that the 87-year-old suffered cardiac arrest during Sunday’s game. He was resuscitated in the stadium but his condition could not be stabilised and he died later in the day in hospital.

Frankfurt said the man was a long-time club member and season ticket holder.

“When someone is taken from our midst right before our eyes, it is almost impossible to put into words. The Eintracht family is deeply saddened,” the club said.
