The Boston Red Sox are off to a subpar start to the season, and Trevor Story did not hold back when discussing the performance.

The Red Sox are 1-5, good for their worst start through six games since 2019. The team has been outscored 32-17, and the new-and-improved rotation has not looked much better than last year’s. The team won on opening day but has not been in the win column since. The Houston Astros swept the Red Sox at Daikin Park, and Story was very critical of the team’s performance.

“Just unacceptable, really, on both sides of the ball,” Story told MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “Defense, too. So overall, not good. And looking to reset here on the off day and get back at home at Fenway, where we dominate and play in front of our home crowd. So I’m excited about that.”

Story has been in the big leagues for 11 seasons and has been to the postseason just three times. He has been on some bad teams, but this year’s Red Sox were not supposed to be one of those teams. They are loaded with young talent and made major moves to improve the rotation in the offseason. Nothing has clicked so far, but there is still time to change things.

The offense has not lived up to expectations so far. Story, Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran and Willson Contreras were supposed to be a great offensive group, but so far Abreu is the only one who has really impressed. However, Story did think the team was heading in the right direction on Wednesday.

“Obviously not good,” Story said. “Today was better. A lot of better at-bats. Had some traffic out there and had some movement, so a step in the right direction. But we’ve got to find a way to be more consistent. We have a lot of good hitters, but we’re not moving the line the way we should, and that’s how our offense is built.”

It’s still very early in the season, and the Red Sox can put the first six games in the rear view. They have the players to turn things around, and it’s a matter of executing.
