Matt Fitzpatrick lost out to Cam Young by just one stroke at The Players Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Fitzpatrick began the final round of The Players one shot adrift of Young and a further four behind the third round leader, Ludvig Aberg.
TPC Sawgrass was extremely challenging on Sunday with the rough thicker than it has ever been and the greens becoming harder and faster as the day went on.
Cam Young mastered the golf course in the end and posted a round of four-under par 68 on day four of The Players Championship and the major champion Fitzpatrick matched that score.
Both the American and the Englishman are quiet, reserved, yet uncompromising characters.
Young had the vast majority of fans at TPC Sawgrass fully behind him, unsurprisingly so.
Young said he still had a chance to win The Players immediately after his third round, despite being four shots adrift of Aberg at the time.
And the 28-year-old American has now been proven right.
Matt Fitzpatrick on what Cam Young’s behavior was like at The Players
Young can come off as slightly aloof to those who don’t really know him.
He doesn’t usually say anything of any substance when speaking to the media and as a result, he has a reputation for being somewhat detached and impersonal.
However, is that reputation unfair?
Fitzpatrick spoke to reporters after the final round of The Players, and he was asked what it was like to play alongside Young at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday.
“Yeah, great,“ Fitzpatrick exclaimed.
“I love Cam. He’s such a nice guy. He’s so laid back; it’s so nice.
“Always knew we were going to have a good day today, just obviously both comfortable around each other, and it was great.“
Who would have thought that Fitzpatrick and Young would have got on so well? That is certainly a lesson in why nobody should judge a book by its cover!
Cam Young says how he has changed his behavior on the golf course
It was put to Young that he looked incredibly calm out on the golf course during the final round of The Players.
He was then asked how he managed to remain so composed throughout the entire round.
“Yeah, it’s something we’ve worked a ton on,“ he said.
“And this week, going into it, you know it’s going to be like that, if the wind blows at all this place is volatile, like you said.
“I feel like we just kept ourselves in a really good spot all day today, really all week. The nerves kicked in over the 8-inch putt on the last.
“That hole looked really, really small there from pretty close range. So happy to have finished it off, and just really excited to have played the way I did.“
Fair play to the New Yorker. He has a history of being extremely volatile at times on the course, but that certainly wasn’t the case at Sawgrass on Sunday.
Cam Young is the 2026 Players Champion and he seriously had to earn it, when coming up against an in-form Matt Fitzpatrick.
