Bayern Munich secured three points via a crucial win away against Borussia Dortmund. This places them well-ahead of the rest of the teams in the title race. The game may have been important in terms of points, but more than that, it was a test. A test of Bayern’s physical endurance and ability to handle unpredictable, yet crucial games.

Joshua Kimmich, following the 3-2 win, spoke on the game’s facets — the physicality, the errors in Bayern’s game and the overall unpredictable nature of the game. “It was a physical game, with quite a few mistakes, especially in the first half. There were many interruptions, set pieces, fouls, so there was never really a consistent rhythm,” the goalscorer said, via @iMiaSanMia. There were several challenges and Dortmund were constantly receiving set-pieces in the first half, which often led to interruptions. Additionally, Bayern was clearly not equipped to deal with set-piece defending, as demonstrated by the way they conceded the first Dortmund goal.

However, Bayern came back in the second half, purely with the intention of winning and there were a few factors on their side. Kimmich speaks on those factors — citing Dortmund’s fatigue in particular. “In the second half, the game became a bit more fluid. We also knew at halftime that it would be more difficult for Dortmund to maintain that high intensity after they had some difficult weeks with a lot of games,” he said, referring to Dortmund’s midweek loss to Atalanta.

“We knew that the longer the game went on, the bigger our advantage would become. Thankfully that advantage materialized very late in the game,” he said. Perhaps he was referring to his goal, which did come rather late in the game.

While there are concerning mistakes to Bayern’s game, looking on the bright side, the title race is closer to being secured than ever. Now, the team’s full attention can shift towards Europe.
