Can the New York Mets ever have nice things? In this case, will Francisco Lindor be ready for Opening Day? At this point, I’m not sure how likely that will be, but the good news is that things with Lindor’s injury appear to be progressing well. If something can go wrong for the Mets, it seems like it’s inevitable. Their history is littered with missed expectations and underperformance. New York seemingly invents new ways to lose and disappoint their fans. After a reset this off-season, things seemed to be on track for the Mets to build their 2026 season, and beyond, around Lindor and Juan Soto. Until they weren’t on track any longer.

Timing could help:

The Mets were barely able to bask in the glow of Spring Training and a new season before the news came out. Lindor was having surgery on his hamate bone. Of course, that put Lindor’s status for Opening Day in serious doubt.

By all indications, the surgery went well. Lindor’s stitches are already out, but even before that, the shortstop was taking part in some drills. The latest update is that he should begin activities with a higher level of impact by the end of the week.

Based on that timeframe, it means that the Mets might have caught a break. To this point, Lindor hasn’t had any setbacks, and he shouldn’t be too far delayed either. Of course, once the shortstop kicks things up a notch and begins to take impact swings, that could change.

How this injury could affect Lindor:

However, that doesn’t mean Lindor, or anyone, is ready to commit to anything less than Opening Day. Considering the type of injury it is, there is going to be an overarching concern surrounding Lindor’s power. At least initially, that part of Lindor’s game could be limited.

The good news, though, is that Lindor contributes so much more than just power. And given the updates and statuses we have received, it appears that the shortstop should be back sooner rather than later.
