One of the greatest Ohio State basketball coaches of all-time has joined the 500-win club. Thad Matta coached the Buckeyes from 2004 to 2017 and ushered in arguably the golden age of the program. During his time holding the clipboard, Matta steered OSU to five Big Ten regular-season titles, four Big Ten Tournament titles, and two Final Four appearances, including a runner-up finish at the end of the 2006-07 campaign.

While at Ohio State, Matta racked up 337 wins, the most of any OSU coach in history. Before being named the coach in Columbus, Matta spent one season at Butler and three at Xavier. He made his name in Scarlet and Gray, however, until he stepped down in 2014, when the program began to fall off at the end of his career, citing health reasons.

Matta found the desire to coach again however, in 2022, when he landed back at Butler. His teams have yet to make the NCAA Tournament, and are unlikely to do so again this season, but with a win Wednesday night at Georgetown, Matta notched his 500th win, a mark not too many coaches have an opportunity to reach.

The Indiana native is now 500-220 for his career, and you have to wonder how much he has left in the tank at the age of 58 years old. Either way, getting that 500th win is an incredible achievement, and there are many in Buckeye Nation that extend congratulations and continue to wish arguably the best Ohio State hoops coach of all-time nothing but the best.
