MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Saturday announced a handsome Rs 7.5 cr prize money for the India under-19 team for winning the Under-19 World Cup in Harare a day earlier. Powered by 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s scintillating 80-ball 175 which was studded with 15 sixes and as many fours, India’s U-19 team, captained by Ayush Mhatre, put up a record total of 411 for nine in 50 overs beat England (311 in 40.2 overs) by 100 runs in a high-scoring game.

This was India’s sixth U-19 World Cup triumph, and their first since 2022.

When India last won the Under-19 World Cup in 2022 under Yash Dhull, each player was awarded Rs 40 lakh, while members of the support staff received Rs 25 lakh. Similarly, the Indian women’s Under-19 teams that won titles in 2023 and 2025 were rewarded with Rs 5 crore by the BCCI.

Despite their achievement, India’s players haven’t received any prize money from the International Cricket Council, as the ICC categorises the Under-19 World Cup as a developmental tournament aimed at nurturing young talent rather than a commercial competition. As part of this structure, teams already receive funding through the ICC’s development programs, and the governing body of the game does not award separate prize money for finishing positions in the tournament.
