SANTA CLARA, California — The last time the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks faced off in a Super Bowl, things certainly ended with a bang.
It was second down for the Seahawks, who were inside the Patriots’ 1-yard line with 26 seconds remaining. But, instead of handing it to their star running back, quarterback Russell Wilson attempted a quick pass to Ricardo Lockette. That’s when cornerback Malcolm Butler jumped the route, intercepting Wilson and securing the victory for New England.
And with that, he became a hero to Patriots fans everywhere.
So, with the Patriots and Seahawks facing a rematch in Super Bowl LX, it’s certainly brought back some memories for Butler.
“Oh yeah, 100%. I think about it every day,” Butler exclusively told Patriots Wire. “All the great things about it, the ups, the downs, it’s something you can’t not think about.”
However, for Butler, New England being in the NFL’s biggest game this season came as a big surprise.
“Well, I didn’t expect the Patriots to go to the Super Bowl. I expected them to have a great season, which they did. Outstanding because they’ve got an outstanding coach,” he said. “I was watching from the first round of playoffs until the Denver Broncos game, and when we beat those Broncos, I said, ‘Okay, now let’s win against the Rams or Seattle. And then Seattle won. I just felt like I was getting ready to play in the game. Like I still feel like I’m playing, but I’ll be there in spirit.”
And he took a moment to send a simple message to the team, having been in their spot before.
“I would say, build each other up,” he stated. “Because if you build each other sideways, you’re taking up everybody’s space.”
