Real Madrid played well to beat Monaco 6-1 and remain in the top eight of the Champions League with one game to go. This was Madrid’s second home win in three days.
The match started well for Mbappé, who scored two goals in the first half, while Madrid scored four goals in the second half. The goals were scored by Franco Mastantuono, Thilo Kehrer (own goal), Jude Bellingham, and Vinícius Júnior. The Player of the Match was Vinícius Júnior, who recorded two assists and one goal.
Madrid opened the scoring very early, inside the first five minutes. It was a team attack that started with Mastantuono on the right side, Federico Valverde’s pass inside, and Mbappé scoring with ease past goalkeeper Philipp Köhn.
Two minutes later, Madrid almost doubled their advantage with a quick counter-attack, but Vinícius’ left-foot shot just curled wide of the target. The pressure mounted, and Köhn produced an excellent save in the 20th minute following Eric Dier’s clearance of Arda Güler’s free kick.
Madrid doubled their lead in the 26th minute with a good team move. The move began with a back heel pass from Eduardo Camavinga, a precise pass from Arda Güler to Vinícius, and Mbappé scored his 11th goal in the competition.
Almost a Monaco goal came when Teze struck the crossbar, and Thibaut Courtois saved a shot by Ansu Fati in the 42nd minute. Bellingham headed a cross by Mastantuono wide in the final minutes of the first half.
The second half followed the same pattern. Five minutes into the new half, Madrid scored again. This was the result of another assist from Vinícius, who set up Mastantuono to score with his right foot to make it 3-0.
In the 55th minute, Vinícius moved down the left side, picking out Güler, who put in a cross that resulted in an own goal off Kehrer. Eight minutes later, Vinícius scored his own goal, beating Kehrer with a quick move, striking the ball in the top corner to make it 5-0.
Madrid remained solid until Güler’s shot bounced off the post, but Teze got one back for Monaco in the 72nd minute. Madrid responded quickly to that goal. In the 80th minute, Bellingham beat Köhn with a dribble and scored with the assistance of a pass from Valverde to make it 6-1.
Young player Mesonero also made his debut shortly after that, substituting Valverde, as his team went on to win. This leaves Madrid in the top eight in the Champions League and marks their rising momentum as they approach the knockout stage.
