SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The San Diego Padres are reuniting with a pair of familiar names, adding former outfielder Wil Myers and veteran manager Bud Black to the organization in newly created off-field roles. The hires were first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune and confirmed by multiple outlets.

Myers has been named a special assignment coach within player development, marking his first official step into a coaching role since the conclusion of his playing career. The former Padre spent 11 seasons in the major leagues from 2013 through 2023, with the most significant portion of his tenure coming in San Diego. From 2015 to 2022, Myers appeared in 888 games for the Padres and became a central figure during a transitional era for the franchise.
During his time in San Diego, Myers combined power and athleticism, totaling 134 home runs and 94 stolen bases while posting a .254/.330/.451 slash line. His offensive production graded above league average, and he provided value across multiple positions, including both corner outfield spots and first base. Advanced metrics credited Myers with 13.6 wins above replacement during his Padres tenure.
In December 2024, Myers announced that he had stepped away from playing, though he stopped short of formally filing retirement paperwork. His new role signals a transition into player development, where his experience as an everyday major leaguer and postseason contributor could provide insight to younger players navigating the early stages of their professional careers.
Black returns to San Diego in a senior advisory role after a lengthy career as both a player and manager. A former major league left-hander, Black transitioned into coaching in the late 1990s before being named the Padres’ manager in 2007.
He held that position for more than eight seasons, guiding the club through a low-payroll period while compiling a 649–713 record. His most notable season came in 2010, when the Padres finished 90–72 and he was named National League Manager of the Year.
After his departure from San Diego in 2015, Black took over as manager of the Colorado Rockies in 2017. The Rockies reached the postseason in each of his first two seasons, though the club struggled in subsequent years. Black was dismissed in May 2025.
Despite expressing interest last fall in returning to a managerial role, Black did not secure another dugout position. His advisory role with the Padres allows him to remain in the game, bringing decades of experience to the organization’s baseball operations group as San Diego continues shaping its on- and off-field structure for the 2026 season.
